Hi Ya Kids! Meet my second Mom.

    September 18th, 2009 by Jer

    Hi Ya Kids!

I’m in Ann Arbor, Michigan for a few days visiting Doris Dixon. Doris is among the most special people in my life. In some ways, I owe her my life.

    Jerry-and-Doris

Here’s how we met. A thousand years ago I moved to Detroit. (This was 8 years before Jeff). I was the new morning DJ on a screaming rock station, WDRQ. I realized that the tool I had, a microphone, provided a powerful way to teach people about animal protection. I wanted to find an animal protection group and offer them the use of my show. I looked in the phone book and found The Fund For Animals in Ann Arbor. I called. A woman named Doris Dixon answered. I told her who I was. She told me “Get over here within 5 minutes”. And when Doris says 5 minutes, 5 minutes and five seconds is not acceptable.

“He was under my spell the instant we met”, Doris says. During the next ten years Doris taught me everything I know about how to help animals. She turned my anger over their treatment by humans into compassion. She turned my despair into hope.

She taught me to be effective rather than furious. My education continues to this day.

Doris has quite literally devoted her life to animal protection. She has seen things in her lifetime, unthinkably horrible things, that I promise would keep you and me awake for 6 months. Yet, I have never seen her get angry. Instead, she get’s busy. I’ve watched her write letters, make calls, gather signatures, debate animal abusers on radio and TV, launch publicity campaigns and drive people to polling places to vote for animals. All of it grassroots. And that is tough. But her successes are remarkable.

If, in my lifetime, if I accomplish a tenth of what Doris has done for animals, I’d feel I’d done something with what I’ve been given.

Another of Doris’s “kids” is Wayne Pacelle the president and executive director of the largest and most powerful animal protection group in the world, The Humane Society of the United States. She brought him up, too.

    Doris-Cougar

Thirty years later, Doris’s house hasn’t changed. Not an ounce. Nothing. The giant stuffed (plush toy) cougar is still lying across the archway to the kitchen. The dining room table is still covered in file boxes.

Books, research reports and folders cover the floor. The 8 foot fold-away table in the living room has never been folded; it’s buried under mounds of letters, newspaper clippings, binders and call lists. The IBM Selectric typewriter on which she wrote literally thousands of letters is still in the same spot where it’s been since rocks. Honestly, her house is a mess. And I love it so much. It’s home. And a place from which action and compassion have beenflowing into the Universe for decades.

    Doris-Interior

Doris wrote a book about her remarkable life. You can get it on Amazon. It’s a fun, light and informative read. I’d love you to buy it. Read it, then give it to your kids. Here’s the link: http://www.amazon.com/Memoirs-Compassionate-Terrorist-

Doris has not had the best health lately, so I’ve promised myself I’ll get to Michigan every couple of months. It’s so important. One day I won’t be able to. I can’t imagine that. So I need to come here often. Every time I do, I learn more.

Impossible to describe how much I owe this lady or how much I love her.

    Buy the book!

    Love,

    Jerry

Hi Ya Kids! Some random thoughts.

    September 15th, 2009 by Jer

    Hi Ya Kids,

This is kind of a short one. (That’s what she said). I’m racing around prepping to go out of town tomorrow. Going to Michigan to see my second mom. That story when I get there. With pix!

Speaking of pix, I saw “Inglourious Basterds” for the second time yesterday! Whoa! Tarentino is a mad genius. This flick comes close to getting the “Jer-antee”, but doesn’t because it’s kinda violent. Pam, to my surprise, didn’t find the violence too much. And she loved the film. I most highly recommend it, but be forewarned –there’s a lot of gunplay. And it’s a long movie, so drain it really well before you go in there.

“When are you guys going back on the air”? A lot of you guys are asking. Soon. I’d predict sometime next month if “things” keep going well.

I was driving to the gym this morning and suddenly I thought, “I wonder what Janet Reno’s doing today?” I know – strange, but true.

If you’ve never heard me mention this on the radio, lemme point you to a great website: www.therainforestsite.com It explains itself when you get there. You’ll see why it’s important. And check out the other sites at the top of the page. I click on all of them every day.

The Showgram gang is going to Kate Sessions Park this afternoon to get some fun new pix taken. I don’t think Kate herself is coming. If anyone sees Randy tell him we’re at Belmont Park.

Gotta run. I’m having some minor surgery in a half hour. OK, it’s a manicure, but I could bleed …

Our new website premieres within days! Keep checking in.

    Love, Jerry

Hi Ya Kids! Hot Fun In The Summertime.

    September 13th, 2009 by Jer

     Hi Ya Kids!

Pam and I just got back from Palm Springs. Holy shny-kees! Hot??? I was sweating like John Edwards on father’s day. 112 degrees!!! It was uninhabitable. At 9 o’clock last night it was 97! Thank God beer is mostly water or I’d have dehydrated.

We were actually in La Quinta at the La Quinta Resort and Spa. Very famous place and cheap this time of year. We got a really nice room for $179 a night. We had a little patio with a couple chairs and a table. It was too hot to sit out there, but I fried up a nice mushroom and herb omelet on the table yesterday morning.

You might be wondering, “when are you guys going back on the radio”. I know I am. Some very positive things happened the past couple of days. Hopefully we can announce something in the next little bit. Keep checking back here for details.

Meanwhile, when our revamped website appears here soon, a couple times a week we’re gonna do our show from my garage. Yes, “Garage Radio” video and audio streaming debuts shortly. We need to keep in practice. We’re all afraid we won’t be remember how to do it anymore.

Watched a good movie yesterday. A documentary about Mike Tyson was released this week on DVD. It’s called – wait for it . . . wait for it . . “Tyson”. It was fascinating and a bit sad. But also inspirational. I’m getting a Maori Tribal tattoo on my face like him. Because like that TV commercial says, “I want to be like Mike!”

We’re getting some new photos of The Showgram taken Tuesday. We’ll put video from the shoot on here if it’s interesting. (And how could a video of people posing for pictures not be captivating?). I’m a little worried that unemployment is taking a toll. I saw myself in a mirror today; it looked like Mick Jagger and Barbara Walters had a kid. Thank God for Photoshop.

As always, thanks for checking in on us.

    Love, Jerry

    Hi Ya Kids! It’s Jerry.

    Hi ya Kids!

    It’s Jerry.

Sorry I’ve been out of the picture so long. Getting us another job chews up a lot of time.  But several possibilities are cooking. Patience, gang. (I pray for patience all the time. I say, “Give me patience. And give it to me right now!)

It’s so different being outside early in the morning. I go to the gym around 7 a.m. now (still can’t sleep much past 6) and there are birds and trees and sunshine and people driving around!  I haven’t seen those things before 10 o’clock since John Coleman was riding a tricycle.

Pam and I went to “More Furniture For Less” on Labor Day. (Yes, we do know how to party it up.) You ever been in there? (It’s off Miramar Road.)  (Am I using parentheses too much?)  This place is Gi-Normous! 2 floors. 125,000 square feet. There’s enough room in there to hang 5 or 6 pairs of Kirstie Alley’s jean out to dry.  Our salesman was Barry. I asked him how far he walks every day.  The guy actually knew.  He said on a busy day: Eleven miles! Dude – I haven’t driven eleven miles in the last 2 weeks.

We’re going to Palm Springs tomorrow for a little relapse-ation. We’ve not been for a long time. Because Dorothy (cat) always went with us and we couldn’t handle going there since she’s been gone. But it’s time. We’re taking 2 of our other miniature jungle carnivores, Aja and Alice.  They’ve never been in the car together.  Hope there’s not a hellacious cat fight on the 15 at 80 miles an hour. As a precaution., I’m gonna wear my motorcycle helmet.

Almost time for a beer. (I wrote this around 5 p.m., so don’t get scared if you’re reading it in the morning. Although…)  I started brewing my own beer this year.  Which is good, because I need another way to get more beer faster.  I call it “La Jolla Hooterbrau”. This batch was particularly good. I’ll bring a couple bottles next time we get together and you can have some. Tasty and good for ya.

Thanks so much for continuing to check our site. We have some excellent stuff coming up – including a totally new and redesigned website in a couple weeks with fun stuff we can do together.

One more thing before I pour a chilly one: Thanks. Thank you more than I can possibly describe for being so nice to us. For saying hello when we see each other, for emailing and for the nice calls.  (Just yesterday a guy stopped me at Costco. So I returned to the store and put it back. I didn’t really want it anyway.) We really do miss you guys in the morning. Being connected thru jeffandjer.com is a huge boost.

    Love,
    Jerry
